The Project in Detail

Vale CRW was instructed to carry out major renovation works to the historic Port
talbot plaza cinema by BAM construction.

The grade 2 listed cinema has been abandoned for in excess of 20 years. With plans to demolish and renew half of the building into a multi-purpose community hub, Vale CRW carried out the following works –

❖ Soft strip – hack of exisiting plaster and render finish to internal walls.
❖ Concrete repairs to soffits and slabs.
❖ Waterproofing works to first floor deck.
❖ Self levelling of floors.
❖ Internal rendering and plastering works.
❖ External EWI works with a silicone render finish.
❖ Helical bars to internal walls.
❖ Restoration of the old cinema ticket office which included – Helical bars,
replacing damaged brickwork, new timber roof, rendering and plastering.

Summary

A velosit system was chosen to carry out concrete patch repairs to the soffits in the main lobby. Areas in need of repair where cut square and broken out to a minimum depth of 20mm behind the rebar. The rebar was mechanically cleaned before being coated with an anti-carbonation primer. Velosit repair mortar was then trowel applied to leave a flat smooth finish. To give the existing rebar extra coverage, a 3mm smoothing coat was applied to all the ground floor soffits. Once cured Vale CRW then carried out the plastering works in preparation for decorators.
